Pheu Thai scrambling for a new leader
By The Nation

Pheu Thai MP Chalerm Yoobamrung on Tuesday said he was not in the race for party leadership, replacing Yongyuth Wichaidit who resigned on Monday. Chalerm made his remarks for the first time after making a trip to Dubai last week for talks with ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, seen as the behind-the-scene leader.

"I am not qualified for the job because of my character and outspokenness," he said in a deprecating gesture.

He suggested that Deputy House Speaker Apiwan Wiriyachai might suitable for the job.

Party sources said Thaksin already indicated that MP Somchai Phaetprasert had his blessing to become the party leader. Somchai is presently chairman of the House Committee on military affairs.
